THC and Sleep: Benefits, Risks, and What the Research Actually Shows
THC is the most studied cannabinoid for sleep — and the research tells a nuanced story that most cannabis content glosses over.
The short-term benefit: THC activates CB1 receptors in brain regions that regulate sleep, including areas controlling cholinergic neurons involved in sleep initiation. In the short term, THC has been shown to reduce sleep onset latency — the time it takes to fall asleep. One controlled trial found THC specifically reduced the time to sleep onset compared to placebo.
The long-term concern: At higher doses, and with prolonged use, THC has been associated with suppression of REM sleep — the dream stage of sleep critical for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and cognitive function. CBN: The “Sleep Cannabinoid” Worth Knowing About

CBN (cannabinol) is a minor cannabinoid produced when THC oxidizes — essentially, aged or degraded THC. It has developed a strong reputation as a sleep aid, and you will find it prominently marketed in dispensary sleep products.
